This writing by Dr. Wilson is particularly close to me, for one who was in Country Music Radio for 10 years; having the honor of pushing that CD button to play and hear Dolly Parton singing... anything! Thank you, Dr. Wilson for this honorable tribute to an honorable woman.
For the record, I remember “Islands in the Stream” playing on my parents’ 8-track, with Kenny Rogers.
A MAGA supporter singing this tune is the same kind of historical absurdity as a Nazi singing “When the Saints Go Marching In” during WWII. The trope may be heavy with emotion and nostalgia, but, in the immortal words of Inglourious Basterds:
“You probably heard we ain't in the prisoner-takin' business; we in the killin' Nazi business. And cousin, business is a-boomin'.”
Let’s not confuse enjoying a tune, regardless of what side you’re on, with appeasing a vile enemy.
Bravo. A very thoughtful trubute.
Thanks, Collin.

This is outstanding Ike. I was wondering if any one else felt this loss. Your words summed it up perfectly.
This one was easy to write. And had to be done.

The positive reactions on this essay have come from the “far right” to the “far left” of the spectrum. That’s been heartening.
Everyone yesterday “showed grace,” regardless of where they land on the partisan spectrum.
“Thank you, Dolly!” ❤️
